Dental sealants

I brush and I floss and still I have a cavity, how? Whereas brushing and flossing are the best ways to protect your teeth, we still have those rough areas on the tops of our back teeth (our molars) that have nooks and crannies that harbor extra food and bacteria! These grooves are too small for our toothbrush bristles to fit, making these areas very hard to clean.

Dentists use sealants, a white or clear liquid liquid that hardens into a plastic, that flows down into these groves and hardens to create a smooth surface that is easier to clean and keeps out that pesky cavity-causing bacteria!

Sealants are a quick and easy process! First your tooth is cleaned of any extra food and bacteria using a gel to scrub your tooth and leave an absolutely clean surface, the sealant is painted onto your tooth, and then cured with a specially designed blue light.

According to the American Dental Association using sealants can prevent 80% of cavities in molars and the CDC published a study in 2016 that stated that school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.
